The slang adjective bougie refers, often contemptuously, to those who make their consumer choices based on the desire to appear wealthy and sophisticated. The word bougie is not reserved exclusively for people; it can refer to anything that’s luxurious, exclusive, or frivolous: a luxury ski resort, a cashmere scarf, or even an overpriced cappuccino can be considered bougie. The term originated from the French word bourgeois, which was a way to describe the decadent and materialistic middle classes who were often obsessed with climbing the social ladder.

The term boujee was popularized in 2016 by the hip-hop group Migos when they intentionally misspelled bougie in their hit song “Bad and Boujee.” While both terms describe a person who enjoys a luxurious lifestyle, there is a key difference:
While bougie has a connotation of being out of touch with the lower classes or self-consciously distancing oneself from the lower classes, the term boujee implies that the person enjoys newly-acquired wealth and a decadent lifestyle, but that person stays street smart and maintains connections with people from their original neighborhood.
